How It Works

The Cornerstone Bible Study

The Cornerstone does not require members to have any prior knowledge of the Bible to understand Catholic texts and mysteries. Although this is a Catholic Bible study, our members do not have to be of the Catholic faith. This method of study uses texts written by Catholic theologians, focusing on the historical context to help gain a deeper understanding of how scripture can be applied to modern life.

By alternating study years between Old Testament and New, the structure of the study brings consistency to the connections being made.

A Four Part Method

Our method is designed to help you establish a habit of daily prayer, connect in faith with others, and see the relevance of God’s Word in your daily life. The four parts to this method are:

  1. Daily independent study guide with individual lessons
  2. Small group sessions at the weekly meeting
  3. Spiritual reflections at the weekly meeting connect the scripture to everyday life and historical significance
  4. Commentaries written by a Catholic theologian

“For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them.”

Matthew 18:20 (NRSVCE)

Part 1

Daily independent study guide with individual lessons. Each week members are given a set of questions that relate to a passage of Bible from the current study. There are approximately five questions to be answered each day for five days relating to specific verses, and ending with a “life application” question designed to lead members into reflection and prayer. The lessons can be handwritten or prepared online and generally take 15 minutes a day. The format of the study is designed to help develop a daily opportunity to spend time reading the Word of God in Holy Scripture.

Part 2

Small group sessions at the weekly meeting. Each year the members of every Branch of The Cornerstone are assigned to a small group and remain a part of this group for both semesters of that year. Trained facilitators lead their small groups through the weekly questions and group members share their written answers as well as prayer, while a warm fellowship is nurtured among the members of the group. Small group membership changes each year so that members get to know others within their branch.

Part 3

Spiritual reflections at the weekly meeting connect the scripture to everyday life and historical significance. The Spiritual Reflection weaves personal applications into the week’s study. This Reflection may also include historical and theological background information, as well as prayer. There is no question that the Word of God remains vital and meaningful today!

Part 4

Commentaries written by a Catholic theologian. Each annual study is accompanied by a commentary written by a recognized Catholic theologian. Weekly lessons are followed by a short reading assignment from the commentary intended to enhance the member’s understanding of that week’s study. The commentary is reviewed in advance by the leadership at the Cornerstone to ensure that the level is appropriate for our members.
